Calcium Alginates are typically used to control exudate in moderate-to-heavily draining, Full Thickness wounds and usually need some type of cover dressing.

Collagens

Collagens are the most commonly used advanced wound dressing because they are appropriate for most types of wounds. Patients will need some type of cover dressing.

Foam Dressings

The major advantage of foams is the ability to contain exudate. They are most commonly used as cover dressings on moderate or heavily draining wounds.

Hydrocolloids are self-adhesive, waterproof dressings that promote a moist wound-healing environment. They are often used as cover dressings for wounds with low to moderate drainage.

Hydrogel by the ounce: many clinicians use hydrogels to deliver moisture to the wound bed or to soften eschar. They are most effective on dry or low draining, Full Thickness wounds and will require some type of cover dressing.

Hydrogel Sheets/Gauzes: offer the same advantages as those by the ounce but some clinicians view them as more user-friendly for patients because of their single-application packaging. These dressings will need a cover dressing.
